Overview
Cross over the Nile and drive through lush fields, sugar plantations and dust dry desert as you head for the necropolis of ancient Thebes and the world famous Valley of the Kings. The first photo stop is the magnificent Colossi of Memnon, two gigantic statues that stand proudly, yet virtually alone the entrance to what was Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple. From here, continue to the Valley of the Kings where you can view some of the 62 known tombs that have been hand caved into the valley rock. These belong to the pharaohs of the New Kingdom including Rameses the Great and Tuthankhamun, whose body still lies inside the outmost coffin despite the treasures having been moved to the Egyptian Museum. The Valley of the Queens is also honeycombed with tombs, many of them more colourful than those at the Valley of the Kings. As you marvel at the intricate hieroglyphics, your guide will explain why the Royal Families were buried on the West Bank and then you will be taken to the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Architecturally stunning, this temple would not look out of place with modern buildings and contains beautiful murals on its inner walls.
